Many new patients want to know what to expect during the acupuncture treatment. With the insertion of the acupuncture needles you may feel a few things. You may feel a dull ache, a tingling sensation local to the needle or elsewhere in the body, a sensation of fullness, or the sensation of energy moving in the body. That’s all normal. But if you feel anything sharp, that’s the needle you are feeling and just let us know, as we want you to feel as comfortable as possible while you are receiving your care here. Also, after treatment, you may feel grounded, relaxed and possibly “spacey”. That’s normal with acupuncture, as we always work on balancing the body, mind and spirit. In general, the first visit takes about 60 to 90 minutes, with subsequent treatments lasting about 45 to 6o minutes.
- Wear comfortable clothes that allow access to areas below the elbows and knees.
- Please avoid use of perfume or cologne.
- It is good to have something to eat about an hour before the treatment.
- Please turn cell phones off when entering the wellness center.
- If possible, set aside some time after your treatment to rest.
We have attached our New Patient Intake forms below for your convenience. In order that we may develop a complete and comprehensive picture of your health according to Chinese medical diagnosis, we ask that you complete the “New Patient Intake Forms” to the best of your ability. It is important to develop a clear diagnosis, so that together, we can get to the root of your main health concern.
We have also included our Welcome Letter and Privacy Policy. These additional forms can be reviewed in the privacy of your own home. After reviewing, please sign and bring them with you to your first visit.
At Harmony Community Wellness Center, we want you to experience maximum relief from your health complaints in the shortest amount of time possible. No two conditions or people respond exactly the same. The course of treatment depends on the condition, the severity, and the duration of the condition.
Acupuncture is most effective when you are treated frequently and regularly as treatment effects are cumulative. While a single treatment can provide short term relief, frequent and regular treatments are required for long term benefit. In Asia, a course of treatment may be 12 treatments over 2 to 3 weeks. Some cases require several courses of these treatments. Our community approach reduces the typical cost of treatment by 60% to 80%. We wanted to make the treatments as affordable as we possibly could, so that you can get enough treatments to get well. That is our primary focus.
If your problem is new- For cases of recent injury or illness, you will experience the best benefit from multiple visits in a short period of time. We usually recommend two to five treatments per week, for a couple of weeks. By this time, you should feel much better and you and your acupuncturist can determine if further treatments are needed.
If you have a long term or chronic problem- It is usually best to start with a series of treatments close together, usually twice per week, for a period of time and then gradually increase the amount of time between treatments as your condition improves.
We are considered an "out of network" provider and require payment for services rendered. You may be able to get reimbursement for acupuncture. Please contact your insurance provider to inquire.
How to find out if you have coverage
Some insurance carriers include acupuncture coverage. You can find out if your policy has acupuncture benefits by calling your insurance company's patient information or benefits line. This number can be found on your insurance card.
If your insurance provider does cover acupuncture, here are a few questions that can help you determine your eligibility and coverage:
1. Does my policy have acupuncture coverage?
2. How much is my co-pay for acupuncture?
3. Will I need a referral to see the acupuncturist?
4. What is my deductible?
5. What conditions are covered for acupuncture? (Many plans only cover the treatment of pain)
6. Do you have a combined benefit with acupuncture, chiropractic, and naturopath?
If your insurance provider does cover acupuncture, you should determine whether or not they will accept a "superbill" for reimbursement directly to you. The "superbill" is an invoice we can provide you which contains the codes that insurance companies require. Superbills are generated monthly. Please let us know if you would like monthly superbills.
